Reading
At Hallbrook Primary School, we use a whole-class reading approach. This is so that all children are exposed to high-quality reading texts in their lessons.
Children are exposed to a wide variety of authors, genres and characters, as literature is a fundamental way we deliver our character and leadership curriculum. This selection of books is supported by the recommendations in the Literacy Tree reading curriculum.
In all year groups, we focus on children being able to read at a fluent age-appropriate level. We are keen to ensure that fluency does not mean just reading quickly but also considering how expression, intonation and volume affect the enjoyment of the audience.
For children to understand and enjoy books, we know they need to be able to comprehend what they read. To help with this, we teach the different reading skills that children need. Our Literacy Tree Curriculum follows recommendations from the reading framework on how best to teach reading in school.
