At Hallbrook Primary School, we use a whole-class reading approach. This is so that all children are exposed to high-quality reading texts in their lessons. 

Books are selected by staff so that children are exposed to a wide variety of authors, genres and characters, as literature is a fundamental way we deliver our character and leadership curriculum. 

In all year groups, we focus on children being able to read at a fluent age-appropriate level. We are keen to ensure that fluency does not mean just reading quickly but also considering how expression, intonation and volume affect the enjoyment of the audience. 

For children to understand and enjoy books, we know they need to be able to comprehend what they read. To help with this, we teach the different reading skills that children need. The progression of this is shown in the document attached.
