Phonics
At Hallbrook Primary School, we use the Department for Education accredited scheme Supersonic Phonic Friends, for the delivery of our systematic synthetic phonics teaching. The scheme aims for children to be confident in blending and decoding all sounds by the end of year 1 and the progression is shown below. The scheme is supplemented by reading books which match the learning which has been covered in class and provide the resources needed for children to practise their learning at home.
More information can be found at https://www.supersonicphonicfriends.co.uk/ where there is a video that explains the scheme.
Within the scheme, children progress to understand spelling rules in the English language and this is taught through the familiar characters they will have encountered in their phonics lessons.
Children take the phonics screening check in June of year 1. Throughout EYFS and year 1, children are tracked to ensure they are on target to reach age-related expectations and intervention support helps children who fall behind or do not pass the phonics screening check.
You will be invited to phonics events throughout EYFS and year 1 to help you support your child with learning to read at home.
